Chess Boards

Chess is a classic game of strategy. I suppose it can be played on any old checker board, but for the serious player of chess, it deserves to be played on a board that is serious in the making. The cases and wood mixes of my chess boards can be customized in different ways (including being scaled back to just the board alone), but the way that I build the playing surface...the board itself...is a complex process using techniques that require a great deal of time and care, not unlike a finely crafted piece of furniture. The technique I use ensures that it will not only be structurally sound, but stylish and timeless too. All of the squares making up the board are individually milled and connected together with dowels while purposefully leaving a slight gap. This technique allows the wood to shrink and swell with changes in humidity; it will be very stable remaining dead flat forever. Beveling the edges of each piece combined with the gap gives the surface of the board some nice texture that you can't help but run your hand over. The end result is worth the extra effort to achieve the level of quality you see below. I bet even Garry Kasparov would be glad to play on one of these boards. If you would like to have a full chess board and case, or just a chess board alone, custom made to suit your level of play, I would be glad to discuss the design options with you.

I invite you to check out the gallery below. "Buy Now" items are in stock and available for immediate purchase and ship within two weeks. The others can be made to order.  If you don't see something of interest below, I would be glad to design and customize something to suit your tastes or needs.  Keep watch for more designs and/or variations of those below or feel free to contact me if you would like to be notified when I have some available.

My Build Process

Chess Board Gallery

Floating Lid Chess Board The playing surface of this chess board is walnut and birch. The board frame and box case are cherry. The frame and board serve as a floating box top and opens up to a foam lined divided chamber for the pieces to be stowed away in individual pockets underneath. The corners of the board frame are half lap joints with bevels and a square walnut peg to add a decorative element but also strengthen the joint. The mitered corners of the box case are reinforced by splines.

The Challenger Chess Board The base of this chess board is black cherry with tiger maple inlaid stripes. I hand carved the wood between the stripes to texture the surface. The corner blocks were custom carved with Chinese characters. On one side is the first symbol used for the name of the owner. On the other side is the first symbol used for the word challenger. By themselves I imagine they have completely different meanings and my apologies to the Chinese people for potentially butchering their beautifully written language, but I was going for the effect, and was wholly unqualified to attempt scribing each word in full. Two sliding dove tail drawers for the chess pieces are built into both sides. The board itself is black walnut and birch. The playing pieces are a simple glass set.

My Top Chess Piece Picks
